Split and Merge
Use Split to break a long route or track into parts, such as one part for each day of a multi-day walk. Use Merge to join the routes and tracks in a folder into one. Merge is the reverse of Split, so you can split a route, work on the parts, and merge them back.
Split A Route Or Track
- Open the map screen and turn on Edit Mode.
- Open the context menu on the point where you want the split: right-click on desktop, or press and hold on a phone or tablet.
- Choose Split Route Here or Split Track Here.
Expected result: a folder named after the item takes its place in Routes, Tracks & Waypoints. The folder holds the parts in order, numbered from the start. For example, a route called Snowdon becomes a folder Snowdon holding Snowdon 1 and Snowdon 2.
- The point you split at ends one part and starts the next, so the parts still meet.
- Each part keeps the original's Activity and appearance.
- If there is already a folder with that name alongside it, the new folder is numbered, for example Snowdon 2.
Split At Several Points
If you have selected several points on the same route or track, open the context menu on one of them. It reads Split at Selected Points (N), where N is the number of places it will split. Choose it to split at all of them at once.
Split From Points Explorer
- Open Points Explorer for the route or track.
- Open the row menu on the point where you want the split.
- Choose Split Here. With several rows selected, choose Split at Selected Points (N).
Points Explorer splits in route order, whichever column the list is sorted by.
When Split Is Not Offered
- On the first or last point, because a part needs at least two points.
- On the line between two points. Open the menu on a point.
- On a track that is recording or paused. Stop the tracklog first.
- While you are plotting a route. Choose End Route first.
- On waypoints. Only routes and tracks can be split.
Merge A Folder
- Open Routes, Tracks & Waypoints.
- Open the folder's … menu.
- Choose Merge into Route. When everything to be merged is a track, it reads Merge into Track.
- Check the confirmation, then choose Merge.
Expected result: one route or track replaces the folder, with the folder's name and in the folder's place in the list.
- Routes and tracks are joined in the order shown in the folder, including those in subfolders.
- A folder of tracks makes a track. If any route is included, the result is a route.
- The merged item keeps the Activity and appearance of the first route or track.
- Where one item ends at the start of the next, the line runs straight on. Where there is a gap, the merged line joins the end of one to the start of the next with a straight line, so check the result on the map.
- Waypoint groups in the folder are not merged. They move out of the folder and sit beside the merged item.
- Subfolders are removed with the folder.
Merge is not offered on a folder with no routes or tracks in it, while you are plotting a route, or while a tracklog inside the folder is recording.
Merge After A Split
Merging a folder that Split made gives back one route or track. Where the parts met, the shared point appears once, so a split followed by a merge gives back the original. If you changed the parts in between, the merged item includes those changes.
Undo
Split and Merge are each one undoable change. One Undo puts everything back as it was.
