Glossary

This glossary explains the terms used throughout OMN4. Where app labels differ from generic wording, the app label is used for the entry name.

Maps And Coordinates

  • British National Grid: The UK grid coordinate system used for Ordnance Survey grid references.
  • Change Map: The map screen control for choosing a different map type.
  • download (for offline use): To save supported map data for offline use on the current device.
  • Download Place Data: The Search tool for downloading place data so Search can find places offline. Place data is separate from downloaded map tiles.
  • GPS: The satellite positioning system used by devices to estimate your current location.
  • GPS marker: The marker that shows your current GPS position on the map.
  • grid reference: A coordinate written using a grid system, such as the British National Grid.
  • Latitude/Longitude: An angular coordinate system used by GPS devices, web maps, and international mapping tools.
  • Map Management: The area of OMN4 for managing map downloads and installed map data.
  • map scale: The ratio between distance on the map and distance on the ground.
  • map screen: The main screen where you view maps, routes, tracks, waypoints, and GPS position.
  • map type: A selectable map source or style, such as a topographic or road map type.
  • Place Info: Information shown for a selected place or point on the map.
  • Search: The feature used to find places, roads, postcodes, and features by name.
  • Settings: The area of OMN4 where you configure app behaviour, units, coordinates, and other preferences.
  • streaming: Loading map data from the service as needed instead of using a downloaded offline copy.
  • UTM: Universal Transverse Mercator, a zone-based coordinate system that uses eastings and northings in metres.

Routes, Tracks And Waypoints

  • Activity: A fixed OMN4 classification containing Route and Track calculation, Route/Track/Waypoint appearance, and configured-destination preferences.
  • Add Waypoint: The map action for creating a saved point.
  • folder: A container for organising Routes, Tracks, and Waypoints. Folders do not supply Activity or appearance.
  • custom: An appearance value owned by a Route, Track, or Waypoint rather than supplied by its Activity.
  • from Activity: An appearance value supplied by the item's Activity because no custom value is present.
  • GPX: A file format used to exchange routes, tracks, and waypoints between mapping apps and GPS devices.
  • Goto Grid Reference: The map menu or floating action button entry that opens coordinate entry.
  • Go to Grid Reference: The window or page title after Goto Grid Reference opens.
  • Points Explorer: The tool for viewing and working through points in a route, track, or waypoint set.
  • route: A planned line made from ordered route points.
  • Routes, Tracks & Waypoints: The OMN4 area for creating, importing, organising, and managing route data.
  • inherit / inherited: Use a property's value from the item's Activity because no custom value is present.
  • legacy style value: An older numeric line width, icon size, or map text size outside the current preset list. OMN4 preserves the exact value until you choose a current value or resume inheritance.
  • — Multiple —: A display-only Properties state shown when selected items have different Activities, sources, or values. It is not a value that can be applied.
  • No symbol: An explicit Waypoint choice to display no symbol. It is different from Reset.
  • parent: The folder immediately above an item or folder in Routes, Tracks & Waypoints.
  • Reset: Remove one local appearance value so the Route, Track, or Waypoint uses its Activity value.
  • Reset appearance: Remove every custom Route or Track appearance value without changing Activity.
  • track: A recorded or imported line, often made from GPS points.
  • tracklog: A recorded GPS track created while you travel.
  • waypoint: A saved point on the map.

  • desktop / mobile: Desktop means the OMN4 app experience on desktop computers. Mobile means the OMN4 app experience on phones and tablets.
  • free trial: A time-limited trial of subscription features.
