Maps and Data

Map Management

Use Map Management from the map screen to control what map data is stored on your device. It brings downloading, removal, storage, and verification together in one place.

What you can do here

  • Add or remove areas in My Areas
  • Download a whole map or just the part you select on the map
  • Remove downloaded tiles for one map or a whole area
  • Change the default storage location and move map data where supported
  • Run Verify Map Data if downloaded files need checking

Open Map Management

Open the map screen, then choose Map Management.

The screenshots in this article show the desktop layout.

The screen is split into four working areas:

  • A queue bar at the top that shows the total queued download size and lets you use Cancel All Downloads
  • The Maps section, where My Areas and map rows are listed
  • The Storage section, where you can review storage locations and other map-related storage
  • The Verification section, where you can run Verify Map Data

When you select a map row, the toolbar above the map shows the current map layer, Fit to coverage, Clear, and the main download or delete action.

Work with My Areas

  1. In Maps, select Add Area.
  2. Choose a Group and Area, then select Add.
  3. Expand the area to see the map types available there.
  4. Select a map row to focus its coverage on the map and show the matching actions.

Important:

  • World is always shown and cannot be removed.
  • Areas already in My Areas are not offered again.
  • Removing an area deletes its downloaded maps and removes it from the list.
  • Area rows show the current status and downloaded size for that area.

Download maps

  1. Select a map under My Areas.
  2. To download everything available for that map, use Download All in the toolbar or Download from the row menu when it is shown.
  3. To download part of a map, choose the map, select the coverage you want on the map, then use Download Selected.
  4. Use Fit to coverage if you want the map to jump to the selected map's available coverage.

What to expect:

  • The queue bar shows the total queued size.
  • A queued item shows a dot in the list.
  • Active download work shows a spinner.
  • If downloads are disabled in Settings > Data, OMN4 blocks new download actions until downloads are enabled again.

Selecting OS 1:25,000 shows the toolbar actions and the map coverage.

Remove downloaded map data

  1. Select the map you want to tidy up.
  2. Use Delete All to remove everything stored for that map.
  3. If you only want to remove part of the map, select coverage on the map and use Delete Selected.
  4. To remove a whole area, open that area's menu and choose Remove.

Important:

  • Removals are queued like downloads.
  • If a map shares downloaded tiles with other areas, OMN4 asks you to confirm before deleting shared data.
  • If downloads are already running, OMN4 blocks removal until the queue is finished or cancelled.

Understand the status line

Each map row shows a status on the left and size information on the right.

  • Not on device means nothing is stored locally for that map.
  • Partial on device means only part of the map is stored.
  • On device means the full current coverage is already on the device.
  • Partial Outdated or Downloaded Outdated means OMN4 has older downloaded data that can be updated.
  • Preparing Download, Downloading, or a size followed by left means download work is being queued or is active.
  • Queued for removal or Removing... means delete work is in progress.

Manage storage

Open Storage to review where map data is kept.

If you want the detail on why map sizes and storage totals can differ, see Storage and Verification.

  • Storage Locations shows each available location, its current size, and which one is used for new downloads.
  • Use Add Location... to add another folder where multiple storage locations are supported.
  • Use the radio button beside a location to make it the default for new downloads.
  • Removing a storage location deletes any maps stored there after confirmation.
  • Use Move to... from a map row menu to move one map's downloaded data to another available location.
  • Other Storage lists streamed cache and other map-related storage that OMN4 tracks separately.

Some storage actions only appear when they are available. For example, Move to... only shows when another usable storage location exists for that map data.

Verify downloaded map data

Use Verification when downloaded maps look wrong, seem incomplete, or you want OMN4 to re-check the files on disk.

  1. Open Verification.
  2. Select Verify Map Data.
  3. Wait for the progress bar and status message to finish.
  4. Review the summary. OMN4 shows warnings or a cancelled state if the check did not complete.

While verification is running, downloading, removing, and moving map data are blocked.

Desktop and mobile

  • On desktop, selecting a map row is the main way to work with that map and its coverage.
  • On mobile, Map Management opens as its own panel first.
  • On mobile, choosing a map from the row action menu can open a separate Select Mapping view for map selection and coverage.
  • On mobile, the row action menu can also include View coverage and Map Information, so the menu wording is not always the same as desktop.
